Zen Pencils Comic: 50. NEIL GAIMAN: Make good art
Some days this quote is what keeps me going.
We’ve probably reblogged this before, but it deserves to grace every blog at least twice.
(via kittygirllovesandrew)
This person, my friends
This type of scumbag is the reason that artists think so lowly of themselves. This type of fucking moron is the reason that art is so undervalued. This piece of shit on the internet, that runs around telling artists their art isn’t good and they shouldn’t charge for it, is the reason that artists struggle to price their commissions properly, is the reason people don’t think art is valuable or worth anything, and is the reason we have so many people saying “YOU SHOULD DRAW FOR FREE”
Please go tell this person that it is NOT OKAY to tell an artist their art is shit - without giving constructive criticism - and please tell them that it is NOT OKAY to tell an artist not to charge for their artwork.
Let’s make this person how VERY AWARE of how FUCKING WRONG they are.
And while we’re at it, we should ask them to draw us very complicated drawings that will take hours of their time to complete, and that it should be ENTIRELY FREE because art is obviously not worth any money.
Wait, so now we’re calling in mob justice and full on HARASSING the kid for saying something stupid?
Doesn’t anyone else see what’s wrong with this?? I FEEL LIKE I’M TAKING CRAZY PILLS
What we’re doing is we’re calling people to inform this person how WRONG they are, because what you might not realise is that it is attitudes like this that destroy artists.
It isn’t remotely wrong in any way to get people together behind the cause of STAMPING OUT THIS SHIT ATTITUDE. And it is a shit attitude. It’s an attitude that makes artists who think their art is “shit” even when it’s perfectly good art. It’s attitudes like this that make people think they can’t do art, even though the fact is that to get BETTER at art you have to PRACTISE. It’s attitudes like this that make people think their art is worthless and that they shouldn’t make people pay for it.
This attitude is WRONG.
Until people learn that this attitude is wrong, I’m going to do the same fucking thing to everybody who I see using this attitude.
Until I see people giving CONSTRUCTIVE criticism as to how somebody’s art can be improved, I will do this.
Until people like this little shit stain realise that art isn’t just a HOBBY, for some people it is their JOB and that it IS valuable and SHOULD be paid for, I will do the same thing time and time again.
Asking people to send this coward a message (and I say coward because they have the stones to tell people their art is worthless - without leaving their askbox open) to tell them how self-serving they are being and how much of a shit-lord they are for telling people something they pour HOURS of work into is WORTHLESS is hardly harassment.
(Actually, harassment describes THEIR behaviour perfectly. They go out their way to find artists and tell them their art isn’t worth anything and that their art is shit? That my friend, is harassment.)
